Memory Installation

If you have only one memory module, you can use the empty slot to put another one in. If you already have two modules, you will have to replace the lowest capacity module.

Both modules should have the same clock speed for maximum performance1. The following table summarizes the module names and their speeds. Choose the one that is right for you. The module name is usually printed on the sticker on the module.

Standard Name Module Name Speed
DDR2-400 PC2-3200 400Mhz
DDR2-533 PC2-4200 or PC2-4300 533Mhz
DDR2-667 PC2-5300 or PC2-5400 667Mhz
DDR2-800 PC2-6400 800Mhz

Note: The maximum usable memory on a 32-bit OS is 4GB. To use memory over 4GB you will need a 64-bit processor and 64-bit OS.

Installing the memory module is easy. Simply place the memory in the slot at an angle. Then press down the free end. The module will lock itself into place. The memory modules have notches and will go in only the right way around. So you can't get it wrong!

  • 1. Higher performance DDR2 is compatible with lower performance DDR2 and will run at the lower module's frequency. A faster system bus will run at the rate of the lowest performance memory in use.
