Screen Pullout

By Anonymous - Posted on 16 November 2008

The screen will not come off immediately after screws are removed. It needs to be pulled loose like the hard drive.

The thing is snapped into place on the side of the dock connector and this end can be made to come loose first. Then yank it away horizontally to get it out.

The screen is still connected to the circuit by a bus.

The bus can be partly pulled out and is partly soldered to the board. We can continue dismantling keeping the screen connected.

I am trying to replace the screen on my archos 605, how do you disconnect, the actual screen from the board, because I have cracked my screen and brought a new one.

There are two bits you need to disconnect. The bus cable and the copper cable edge which is soldered into the board.

  1. The bus cable is latched into the slot. Release the bus cable by lifting up the black latch on top of the slot.
  2. You can de-solder the copper grounding edge from the board. If you don't have a soldering rod, just snip the copper cable edge off. You can leave that copper cable edge disconnected.

Is there like a thin piece of plexiglass covering the actual touchscreen? I ran into something with mine and something on top of the screen cracked. Touch functions in the corner of the biggest fragment still work, so the screen itself is fine, but everywhere else doesnt. I'd like to know if there IS a piece of plexiglass that I can replace.

I'm afraid you have broken the touch screen. The Archos uses a resistive touch screen which is composed of multiple layers. You have probably damaged one of the layers. You will need to get the entire screen replaced as I do not believe it can be repaired.

I cracked mine, help!! Where do you purchase the screen assembly?

Look for it on eBay. There were some chinese sellers selling the screen at one point. Otherwise you'll need to find someone selling an otherwise broken Archos with the screen still intact.
